What do you do for work? Give us a few reasons why you love it.
I am a Senior Accountant for a software company. Math/numbers has always been a natural skill set for me, and to be able to use it in my daily work makes it a reason why I love what I do. Helping keep an organization financially on track is an integral part of its success, which is also why I love what I do.
 
In your opinion, what is wrong with the corporate world and how would you fix it?
I don’t have all the facts or statistics, but what I generally see is a lack of development and overworked employees. Employees need to feel they are a part of an organization as opposed to just an “employee.” To fix this, there needs to be a top down and bottom up shift in attitudes and implementation of better work environments. If you hire someone who doesn’t love what they do, then the company suffers. If you hire great talent and don’t provide an enjoyable work environment, great pay and benefits, then the employee suffers. It has to be a balance of give and take.
 
What are the most important lessons you’ve learned in your life?
The most important lesson I have learned in my life is to believe in yourself and to respect yourself. This translates to both work and personal life. If you believe in yourself, you will have the will to motivate yourself when things get tough, and you will have the confidence to keep striving for the best. If you respect yourself, you will have the ability to say no when you can’t, and to stand up for yourself whether it is commanding a higher pay, better resources, better leadership, or to know when to simply walk away.
 
How do you measure success at work? In life?
For me, being successful at work is a product of what I bring to the table as well as the right environment to succeed. If I am giving it a 100% and continuously striving to make things better while having the support and resources to get there, then I can say I am successful at work. In life, (right now) I measure my success in terms of honoring myself, my goals/ambitions and building close family/friend connections.
 
How do you want the world to be different because you lived in it?
Wow, this is tough! I would love to be part of an initiative that empowers kids to dream differently! I know the educational system is slowly changing, but traditionally it’s all about going to school, getting good grades, going to college, and then work. I did all of that, and I excelled at it, but I didn’t feel a sense of fulfillment at work because there was all this pressure to find a job out of college and pay off my student loans. I LOVE what I do now, but that is a product of me having years of experience developing my skillset, becoming good at it and being at the right company with the right leaders. So if people are making better career choices and happier for it, then it makes for a better work environment and possibly people wanting to make a difference in work instead of doing the same old thing.
